As of July 1, 2019, Suffolk County banned cesspool-only replacements. If your system fails and needs to be replaced, you cannot simply swap it for another cesspool the way homeowners could before that date. At minimum, the new system must include a septic tank preceding the leaching structure. That’s the baseline requirement under current Suffolk County Department of Health Services regulations, and it applies to every property in Islip.
Depending on your situation the age of your home, the type of system currently in place, and whether you’re doing a full replacement or a partial repair you may also be looking at an I/A OWTS installation. These nitrogen-reducing systems are now required for new single-family construction in Suffolk County as of July 2021, and they’re the type of system eligible for grant funding through the Suffolk County Septic Improvement Program. Getting a proper assessment done first tells you exactly what your property requires and what options are on the table before you commit to anything.
Cost varies depending on the type of system, your soil conditions, and the scope of work involved. Conventional cesspool and septic replacements generally run in the range of $10,000 to $25,000 for residential properties. I/A OWTS nitrogen-reducing systems which are required for new construction in Suffolk County and are the type eligible for grant funding typically average around $25,000 before grants are applied.
Here’s where it gets more interesting for Islip homeowners: through the Suffolk County Septic Improvement Program, eligible homeowners can access up to $45,000 in combined State and County grants as of July 2025 for qualifying I/A OWTS installations. Those grants are disbursed directly to us after final inspection, so you only pay the balance. The program operates first-come, first-served, and funding is finite it’s not a program that will be available indefinitely. The installation itself once permits are in hand typically takes one to five days for a residential property. The part of the timeline that surprises most homeowners is the permit phase. All cesspool replacements and installations in Islip require SCDHS permits, and processing takes roughly two to four weeks from the time the application is submitted. That’s not something any contractor can shortcut it’s a fixed part of the process. If you’re dealing with a failing system and have some lead time before it becomes a full emergency, starting the process sooner rather than later gives you options. Waiting until the system is completely down means emergency pricing and no time to compare anything.

The grant amounts as of July 2025 go up to $45,000 in combined State and County funding for eligible installations. The money goes directly to us after the final SCDHS inspection, so you’re not fronting the full cost and waiting for reimbursement you pay the net amount after the grant is applied. The critical thing to understand is that this program is first-come, first-served. There is no guarantee that funding will be available a year from now, or even six months from now. If your system is aging and in a neighborhood where the median home was built in 1966, there’s a reasonable chance it is getting an assessment done now rather than waiting until something breaks gives you the best shot at accessing the grant before it runs out.
